DOE OSTI provides DOIs for DOE-funded software through the DOE software services platform and search tool DOE CODE. DOE CODE provides functionality for the submission, hosting, and discovery of scientific and business software. The DOIs assigned to software and code are registered with DataCite to aid in citation, discovery, retrieval, and reuse.

• To assign a DOI to DOE-funded software, users need to create an account in DOE CODE.
• Once users are registered and logged in, they can submit or announce software records to OSTI through DOE CODE to obtain a DOI.
• DOIs are optionally assigned when submitting software to OSTI and automatically assigned to unlimited distribution software provided through the formal announcement process (unless a DOI has already been assigned).

DOIs are assigned to enable researchers to find software and code more easily through additional discovery pathways and to reuse it through citation of the DOI. They also allow for stronger connections to be made between code, publications, and data through reference and citation via DOI metadata.
