DOI Assignment Flowchart

DOIs may be registered for unlimited, publicly releasable STI. If a DOI has already been assigned, enter it in the DOI field within either E-Link or DOE CODE.

Note: Aside from Software for DOE CODE, all types in this flowchart are submitted to OSTI through E-Link.

For Factsheets, Program Documents, Multimedia, Books, Theses, and Dissertations, DOIs are not assigned by OSTI.

For Journal Articles, DOIs are not assigned by OSTI, but they typically already have a DOI from the publisher.

For Conference Papers, DOIs are not assigned by OSTI, but they typically already have a DOI from the publisher.

For Conference Proceedings, DOIs are not assigned by OSTI, but they typically already have a DOI from the publisher.

For Conference Posters, Conference Presentations, and Technical Reports, after you submit the metadata required for DOI assignment and upload the full text, OSTI assigns a DOI.

OSTI then passes the metadata and assigned DOI to Crossref for registration with the International DOI Foundation. For more information on Crossref, please visit https://www.crossref.org/. For more information on the International DOI Foundation, please visit https://www.doi.org/.

Upon approval and release within E-Link, the DOI will resolve to the OSTI.GOV record page where the full text can be accessed.

For Datasets, after you submit the metadata required for DOI assignment and provide a valid URL for the landing page where the dataset is hosted outside of OSTI, OSTI assigns a DOI.

OSTI then passes the metadata and assigned DOI to DataCite for registration with the International DOI Foundation. For more information on DataCite, please visit https://datacite.org/. For more information on the International DOI Foundation, please visit https://www.doi.org/.

Upon release within E-Link, the DOI will resolve to the provided landing page URL where the data is hosted (outside of OSTI).

For Software submitted to DOE CODE, after you submit the metadata required for DOI assignment and provide a valid URL to the repository or landing page for the software or upload the code, OSTI assigns a DOI. Please note that DOI assignment is optional for Closed Source Limited software.

OSTI then passes the metadata and assigned DOI to DataCite for registration with the International DOI Foundation. For more information on DataCite, please visit https://datacite.org/. For more information on the International DOI Foundation, please visit https://www.doi.org/.

Upon approval and release within DOE CODE, the DOI will resolve to the DOE CODE record page where information about accessing the software can be found.
