Types of STI

STI is produced and published in various media and formats, including textual, graphical, numeric, multimedia, digital data, technical reports, scientific/technical conference papers and presentations, theses and dissertations, computer software, journal manuscripts and citations, workshop reports, program documents, patents, and other types of technical data.

Additionally, program documents encompass needs assessments, workshop reports, etc.

Note: "Announce" as used in the context below refers to when the submitter only provides OSTI with an Announcement notice (AN 241.1, AN 241.3, AN 241.5, and AN 241.6) and not the STI product itself. "Submit" refers to an STI product being provided to OSTI, along with the Announcement notice via upload or FTP or making the STI product accessible via a valid URL in the metadata.

Type

Books and monographs

Announcement notice is to include availability.
STI product may be uploaded or posted at site and URL provided to OSTI. Format of full text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full-text can be searchable or non-searchable PDF.

Conference, symposium, lecture, or similar event papers, presentations, proceedings (Colloquium presentations or presentations given at other events, such as a scientific symposium science lecture series, etc.)

Announcement notice must include conference and availability information.
STI product may be uploaded or posted at site and URL provided to OSTI. Full-text format may be PDF, PPT, or AV file. of full-text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full-text can be searchable or non-searchable PDF. Transmission of AV files needs to be coordinated with OSTI.

Dissertations

STI product may be uploaded or posted at site and URL provided to OSTI. Format of full-text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full-text can be searchable or non-searchable PDF.

Journal articles

Announcement notice must include identifying information, e.g. journal information (journal, title, volume, issue, page range, or article number).

Accepted manuscript

STI product may be uploaded or posted at site and URL provided to OSTI. Format of full text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full text should be searchable PDF. Note: An accepted manuscript contains the same peer-reviewed content as the published article but is not an exact copy in terms of form (e.g., reprint) of what appears in the journal.

Patents

OSTI will accept patents via E-Link or through special arrangements, to be included in DOE Patents with links to USPTO. Format of full text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full text can be searchable or non-searchable PDF.

Program documents (i.e., published by or for DOE Program Offices, may include strategic plans)

STI product may be uploaded or posted at site and URL provided to OSTI. Format of full text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full text can be searchable or non-searchable PDF.

Publicly available scientific research data

STI product must be posted at site, DOE Data Center, or other publicly accessible location such as an open repository. URL (and DOI, if available prior to submission) must be included in Announcement notice metadata. (Datasets cannot be uploaded or stored at OSTI.)

Scientific and technical accomplishment reports

STI product may be uploaded or posted at site and URL provided to OSTI. Format of full text should be searchable PDF if URL is provided. Format of uploaded full text can be searchable or non-searchable PDF.
