Title: A solvable irrelevant deformation of AdS₃/CFT₂

Abstract

Recently we proposed a universal solvable irrelevant deformation of AdS3/CFT2 duality, which leads in the ultraviolet to a theory with a Hagedorn entropy [1]. In this note we provide a worldsheet description of this theory as a coset CFT, and compare its spectrum to the field theory predictions of [2,3].

AdS₃ string theory in the stringy regime k = (R_AdS/ℓ_s)²< 1 provides a laboratory for the study of holography in which both sides of AdS/CFT duality are under fairly good control. Worldsheet string theory is solvable, and for closed strings the dual spacetime CFT is a deformation of a symmetric product orbifold. Here we extend this construction to include open strings by adding a probe D-string, described semiclassically by an AdS₂ D-brane in AdS₃. Abstract The BPS sector in duality has been fertile ground for the exploration of gauge/gravity duality, from the match between black hole entropy and the CFT elliptic genus to the construction of large families of geometrical microstates and the identification of the corresponding states in the CFT. Worldsheet methods provide a tool to further explore the relation between string theory in the bulk and corresponding CFT quantities. We study families of two dimensional quantum field theories, labeled by a dimensionful parameter μ, that contain a holomorphic conserved U(1) current J(z). We assume that these theories can be consistently defined on a torus, so their partition sum, with a chemical potential for the charge that couples to J, is modular covariant. We further require that in these theories, the energy of a state at finite μ is a function only of μ, and of the energy, momentum and charge of the corresponding state at μ = 0, where the theory becomes conformal.
