Reaction of Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/

The reaction of Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was studied to determine whether Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ acts as a densification aid in the formation of sialon (silicon-aluminum oxynitride solid solution). An x-ray diffraction pattern different from that of Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/-Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/-3Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was observed. Hot-pressing tests on the new mixture suggest that its probable composition is 5Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/-Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Sinterability of mixtures containing 2 wt percent Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ increased with increasing Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ content to a maximum at 50 wt percent Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/.
