Synthesis of Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ powder by thermal decomposition of Si(NH)/sub 2/ and sintering properties

Conference · · Ceram. Eng. Sci. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5549392
High quality Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ powder developed by the method of the thermal decomposition of Si(NH)/sub 2/ was characterized, and its sintering behavior was studied. Densification studies indicated that the highly pure, fine Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ powder with a narrow particle-size distribution was sinter-active, and dense beta-prime-sialon-alloys were produced by reaction sintering of the highly pure, sinterable Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, AlN, and Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/. High temperature strength was improved by the reduction of excess oxygen in the sialon system. 9 references.
