The sintering reaction for sialon composites composed of Y - {alpha}{prime} - sialon and {beta}{prime} - sialon was investigated in the system Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}-Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}-AlN. It is assumed that Y - {alpha}{prime} - sialon with higher solubility is formed by the reaction between AlN and a liquid phase at the initial stage of sintering, and that Y - {alpha}{prime} - sialon with lower solubility is formed by the reaction between Y - {alpha}{prime} - sialon with higher solubility and the remaining Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} at the final stage of sintering. Y{sub 2}SiO{sub 5} and YAM were formed as intermediate compounds.
