Densification of mixed {alpha}{prime}/{beta}{prime} sialon ceramics and evaluation of their grain-boundary phase

This paper reports on sintering behavior of mixed {alpha}{prime}/{beta}{prime} sialon ceramics, fabricated from {alpha} - Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}, AlN and Ln{sub 2}O{sub 3} (Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}, Er{sub 2}O{sub 3} and Yb{sub 2}O{sub 3}), and discusses the densification process by considering the chemical reactions to form {alpha}{prime} - and {beta}{prime} - sialon and the kinetical analysis of shrinkage. The quantity and character of the intergranular phase in mixed {alpha}{prime}/{beta}{prime} sialon ceramics are also evaluated by internal friction measurements.
