Two ..beta..' - Sialons of composition Si/sub 2/./sub 6/Al/sub 0/ /sub 393/Y/sub 0/./sub 007/O/sub 0/ /sub 4/N/sub 3/ /sub 6/ and Si/sub 26/Al/sub 0/ /sub 384/Y/sub 0/ /sub 014/O/sub 0/ /sub 4/N/sub 3/ /sub 6/ were pressureless sintered from mixtures of Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and separately milled ..beta.. -Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/, AlN, and SiO/sub 2/. These sialons had densities of over 98% of theoretical, four-point bend strengths of 460 and 155 MPa at room temperature and 1400 C, respectively, and 1400 C oxidation rates lower than those reported for hot pressed Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ and for a stronger sialon with 2.5 weight percentage Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/.
