Morphology of the early stages of recovery of hemopoiesis in the spleen of irradiated mice after bone marrow transplantation. [Gamma radiation]

Mice were given a single whole-body dose of 750 R of gamma radiation and 24 h later syngeneic bone marrow was injected intravenously. At intervals up to 6 days the mice were killed and the cell composition of the spleen was studied. Three stages of restoration of hematopoiesis in the spleen were observed: a generalized stimulation of reticular cells of the recipients' splenic red pulp; formation of microcolonies of undifferentiated blast cells; and the appearance of hematologically differential cells and proliferation of colony-forming units.
