Standard method for measuring fast-neutron flux by radioactivation of aluminum

The threshold reaction /sup 27/Al(n,..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Na was used to measure fast-neutron fluxes. After removal from the neutron field, the sample was allowed to age for 1 to 2h to allow the /sup 28/Al and /sup 27/Mg to decay. The 2.754 MeV ..gamma.. ray of /sup 24/Na was then counted with a ..gamma.. spectrometer. With suitable techniques, fission neutron fluxes in the approximate range from 10/sup 7/ to 10/sup 15/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/.s were measured. (BLM)
