Standard method for measuring fast-neutron flux by radioactivation of aluminum

Book ·
OSTI ID:4406557
This method describes the measurement of fast-neutron fluxes with the threshold reaction, /sup 27/Al(n, alpha )/sup 24/Na. This reaction produces /sup 24/Na having a half-life of 15.0 h when irradiated in the fast-neutron fluxes present in nuclear reactors. /sup 24/Na emits gamma rays with energies of 1.369 and 2.754 MeV. Two competing activities, /sup 28/Al and /sup 27/Mg, are formed in the reactions /sup 27/Al(n, gamma )/sup 28/Al and /sup 27/Al(n,p) /sup 27/Mg respectively. Pure aluminum is readily available and as a metal offers no handling problems. With suitable techniques, fission neutron fluxes in the approximate range from 10/sup 7/ to 10/sup 15/ 24/Na threshold reaction is limited by the half-life of /sup 24/Na to measuring fastneutron fluence over irradiation times legs than about 1 d.
