This method describes the measurement of fast-neutron fluxes with the threshold reaction, /sup 54/Fe(n,p)/sup 54/Mn. The reaction produces the radionuclide /sup 54/Mn, having a half-life of 314 d, when irradiated in the fast- neutron fluxes present in nuclear reactors. /sup 54/Mn emits gamma rays having an energy of 0.84 MeV which are easily detected with a gamma-ray spectrometer. A competing activity can result fromthe 1.3 and 1.1-MeV gamma rays of /sup 59/Fe, formed in the reaction /sup 58/Fe (n, gamma ) /sup 59/Fe. If the iron is exposed to thermal neutrons, a chemcial separation may be required to isolate /sup 54/Mn. Pure iron is readily available and easily handled. With suitable techniques, fission neutron fluxes in the approximate range from 10/sup 9/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/ s to 10/sup 15/ neushold reaction, because of the relatively long half-life of / sup 54/Mn, is capable of measuring fast neutron fluence over irradiation times approaching 1 y.
