CROSS SECTIONS FOR THE INTERACTION OF 14.5 Mev NEUTRONS WITH MANGANESE AND COBALT
The cross sections for 14.5-Mev neutron reactions were investigated for Mn and Co by irradiating a disk of one of these metals sandwiched between Cu disks for times shorter than the half life of the activity to be measured and counting the gamma rays from the sample in a shielded scintillation spectrometer. The results are as follows: (1) Cu/sup 65/(n,2n). The cross section relative to Cu/sup 63/(n,2n) is 1030 plus or minus 95 mb. (2) Mn/sup 55/(n,2n). The cross section from the 0.84-Mev gamma ray from Mn/sup 54/ is 825 plus or minus 185 mb. (3) Mn/sup 55/(n, alpha ). The cross section from the 1.43-Mev gamma ray from V/sup 52/ beta decay is 27 plus or minus 5 mb. (4) Co/sup 59/(n,2n). The cross section from the decay of the 0.8-Mev activity is 855 plus or minus 165 mb, and 45 plus or minus 25% of the reaction gives the 9-hr Co/sup 58/ isomer. (5) Co/sup 59/(n,p) from the gamma rays foIlowing the Fe/sup 59/ decay, the cross section is 80 plus or minus 23 mb. (6) Co/sup 59/(n, alpha ). The cross section relative to Cu/sup 65/(n,2n) is 29 plus or minus 6 mb. (D.L.C.)
