Measuring fast-neutron flux by radioactivation of aluminum

The method describes procedures for determining neutron flux density by the activation reaction /sup 27/Al(n,..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Na. The activation reaction has a threshold of about 6 MeV (0.96 pJ) and is most useful for irradiation times up to about 2 days (0.17 Ms). With suitable techniques, fission-neutron flux densities above 10/sup 7/.cm/sup -2/ . s/sup -1/ (0.1/..mu..m/sup 2/ . s) can be measured. The method includes a discussion of significance, definitions, apparatus, materials, procedure, calculations, reporting, precision, and accuracy. (JMT)
