Measuring fast-neutron flux by radioactivation of iron

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5550052

The method describes procedures for determining neutron flux density by the activation reaction /sup 54/Fe(n,p)/sup 54/Mn. The activation reaction has a threshold of about 1.5 MeV (0.24 pJ) and can be used to determine fast neutron fluences for irradiation times up to about 3 year (90 Ms). With suitable techniques, fission neutron flux densities above 10/sup 9/ cm/sup -2/ . s/sup -1/ (10 ..mu..m . s) can be determined. However, in the presence of a high thermal-neutron flux density, /sup 54/Mn depletion should be investigated. The method includes a discussion of apparatus, reagents, materials, procedure, calculations, reporting, precision, and accuracy. (JMT)
