Measuring fast-neutron flux by radioactivation of nickel

The method describes procedures for determining neutron flux density by the activation reaction /sup 58/Ni(n,p)/sup 58/Co. The activation reaction has a threshold of about 1 MeV and can be used to determine fast-neutron fluences for irradiation times up to about 200 days in the absence of high thermal neutron fluxes. With suitable techniques fission-neutron flux densities above 10/sup 8/ cm/sup -2/ . s/sup -1/ can be determined. The method includes a discussion of apparatus, materials, calibration, calculations, reporting, precision, and accuracy. (JMT)
