Locally-owned and operated utilities began recovery in 1975

The year 1975 was one of mixed success for the nation's largest publicly- and cooperatively-owned electric utility organizations. Although kilowatt-hour sales increased at a rate approximately double that of the nation's Top 100 investor-owned electric utilities, and revenues increased substantially, operating margins or income inched up only slightly. Approximately 27 percent incurred decreases in operating margins, and four organizations suffered actual losses. This brief report covers the performance of the 45 largest locally-owned, locally-operated electric utility organizations. Included are 20 of the nation's largest utilities owned and operated by local, district or state governments, the 10 largest Generation and Transmission co-operatives, and the 15 largest electric distribution cooperatives. No federal projects are included. Together, these organizations served 4.74 million customers, 5.8 percent of total customers in the U.S. in 1975, and 26.5 percent of the customers served by publicly-owned electric utilities.
