50 locally-owned utilities in 1978 outperformed investor-owned counterparts

Fifty locally-owned utilities outranked their investor-owned counterparts in kilowatt hour sales growth, new customers, revenues, and margin in 1978. Besides selling electricity and collecting revenue, the top 50 have started public information programs, emphasized policies of conservation, and participated in research and development projects. Statistical data is summarized and presented in graphs which rank the top 10 generation and transmission cooperatives, the top 20 public power organizations (excluding federal), and the top 20 distribution cooperatives.
