Part of the success of drilling in water depths of over 2000 ft without anchors depends on the reliability of the power generating plant, the thruster/propulsion units, and the dynamic positioning system. To increase reliability and safety, instantaneous information on equipment performance is needed. SEDCO designed the Data Management System (DMS) which was installed on the drill ships SEDCO 471 and SEDCO 472 and the semi-submersible SEDCO 709. The system basically consists of two units: the DMS control console and a computer system. The system description and operation are discussed.
