SEDCO 709: first dynamically stationed semi-submersible. IV. Eight thrusters provide 24,000 hp

The operations envisioned for SEDCO 709 are without precedent in offshore drilling. This is reflected in the unit's design characteristics. The water depth capability extends to 6,000 ft and the criteria for station keeping range to 2.5-knot currents, 56-ft maximum waves, and 59-knot winds, gusting to 76 knots. The hull has been ice-strengthened to obtain ice-classing and permit operations in severe Arctic regions. One of the first tasks facing SEDCO engineers when they set out to design a dynamically stationed semi-submersible was to develop large thrusters. The result is the 3,000-hp units. SEDCO 709 is fitted with eight of these units. To give maximum operational flexibility within the fields opened by a dynamically stationed semi-submersible, the SEDCO 709 will have available a new generation of subsea and re-entry equipment, numerous structural improvements, data management system, and the powerful thrusters.
