The world's first dynamically stationed semisubmersible, SEDCO 709, will be commissioned and tested early in 1977. The unit will commence drilling operations before the summer of 1977. The operations envisioned for SEDCO 709 are without precedent in offshore drilling. Its water depth capability extends to 6,000 ft. and the criteria for station keeping range to 2.5 knot currents, 56-ft maximum waves, and winds of 59 knots, gusting to 76 knots. The hull has been ice-strengthened to obtain ice-classing and permit operations in severe Arctic regions. In designing and overseeing the construction of the new unit, SEDCO used five highly successful years of experience in drilling from dynamically stationed drill ships: SEDCO 445, SEDCO 471, and SEDCO 472. The company also had 12 years of experience as primary designer and operator of semi-submersibles. This special deep water, dynamically stationed semisubmersible will be operated by Marine Drilling, S.A. (a company owned jointly by SEDCO and a Shell company).
