The world's first dynamically positioned semi-submersible SEDCO 709 has been designed to operate in up to 6000 ft of water and to meet the technological challenge of deepwater drilling. One of the more significant aspects of the drilling unit is the design and development of the subsea blowout preventer capable of deepwater guidelineless re-entry and a BOP control system utilizing state-of-the-art multiplexed electro-hydraulic controls. This section of the six-part series discusses the new and improved design features which set the SEDCO 709 apart from other drilling units of its own, and any other, class of rigs. The SEDCO 709 utilizes two identical 16/sup 3///sub 4/-in., 10,000-psi working pressure BOP stacks to provide complete subsea redundancy in any working area of the world. The two BOP stacks begin with the basic four ram assembly plus an annular preventer on the lower marine riser package. Because the SEDCO 709 is a dynamically positioned deepwater drilling vessel, special engineering effort has gone into the development of several unique features of the BOP stack. The features are discussed.
