The results of an analysis of the total secondary-particle multiplicity distributions of ..pi../sup -/p interactions at 5--40 GeV/c are presented. A new formula capable of representing all the investigated distributions is proposed. It is shown that the distribution with respect to the multiplicity n'=n-2 of ''truly produced'' particles satisfies the KNO scaling hypothesis in the energy range examined, and a simple analytic formula for the universal KNO scaling function is proposed.
