Over the past year or so, the world gas turbine OEMs continued with business adjustments through mergers, joint ventures, unit consolidations and partnerships that seem to change the face of the industry on an almost monthly basis. Where last year the political revolution in Eastern Europe influenced many new business ventures, this year the emphasis seems more on consolidations, technology exchange and cooperative marketing arrangements. For example, following on the heels of a U.S. Navy marine propulsion engine development contract to a Westinghouse Marine-Rolls-Royce team, the two corporations announced a separate, unrelated 15-year cooperative agreement calling for development and marketing of land-based gas turbines and combined cycle power plants. As one result, Westinghouse Combustion Turbine is marketing the RB211 as a simple cycle generator set rated 27.4 MW and as a PACE 35 packaged combined cycle at 37.0 MW for 60-Hz service areas. Across the Atlantic, European Gas Turbines consolidated its business units to present a more unified corporate image, and in the process retired some of the most venerable names in the business. GE Power Systems Europe Ltd. was formed during the year to handle marketing, sales and service of GE Industrial Power Systems (Schenectady) products throughout Europe. The new company, headquartered in London, is said to be designed to complement GEIPS' strong network of European business associates, including EGT. In the U.S., Siemens consolidated its businesses with Siemens Power Corp. now overseeing all U.S.-based power generation activities, including gas and steam turbines.
