Westinghouse designs barge-mounted power packages

The factory approach has been used for years by manufacturers of turbine packages up to about 55 MW. Beyond this size, the package becomes too big to move by conventional means - truck, railroad, or in the hold of a ship - so that larger generating plants have tended to be assembled on-site from components shipped in from manufacturers. In recent years, Westinghouse engineers have conducted feasibility studies on much larger floating power plants than had been constructed previously; everything from simple-cycle and cogeneration plants with heavy-frame gas turbines, up to nuclear units. When rising demand for electric power expanded, the market for gas turbines in Asia, Africa and South America, engineers Ben Snow and Gene Barsness were given the assignment to 'develop a line of products which can provide quick power to developing countries'. This line includes barge-mounted gas turbine power packages up to 450 MW. Using computer-assisted design (CAD) techniques, Snow, Barsness and their colleagues have designed simple-cycle and cogeneration plants using the 251 and 501 gas turbines, mounted on up to four barges. Similar designs for the Westinghouse 701F and the Rolls-Royce Industrial RB211 and Industrial Trent are also being developed. 2 figs.
