The expanding gas turbine relationship between Westinghouse and Rolls-Royce has taken another major step forward with the announcement that the Rolls-Royce Trent aero-derivative gas turbine will power a new 50 MW Westinghouse EconoPac power generation system. At 50 MW, the Trent EconoPac system would be the largest aero-derivative system available for power generation applications. The new Trent-powered EconoPac system is a self-contained system designed for use in peaking, combined-cycle or cogeneration applications in both 50 and 60 Hz markets. Generator options for the system include both air-cooled or totally enclosed water-to-air-cooled. The two companies are reporting a 42% simple-cycle efficiency for the new system; 52% for combined-cycle operations, both figures near the leading edge of technology. 3 figs.
