In October 1989 Stewart and Stevenson set up a joint venture with Thomassen International, GE's Dutch manufacturing associate, to promote aeroderivative gas turbines for industrial combined heat and power (CHP) duty in Europe. Two years later their first orders are now ready for shipment. Except in the Netherlands, most recent European industrial CHP installations have tended to be based on the smaller gas turbines below 10 MW. There is a noticeable gap in the market between these installations and those of the large energy users in the oil and petrochemical industries where there is a large population of Frames 5 and 6. The new venture, Thomassen Stewart and Stevenson International BV (TSSI), seeks to redress the balance. This article describes the gas turbine package shipped and the six more for which orders have been made.
