The authors study the one-electron characteristics of a batch of FEU-117 instruments under different modes of modulator operation. Eight samples of the FEU-117 series were tested. Three of those were found suitable for photon counting, and their one-electron characteristics, obtained in the rated modulator operation, are listed. The results indicate that the one-electron output of the FEU-117 may be of the order of 40%, and that the counting rate of the selected samples is within 2000 sec/sup -1/, with a distinct output pulse peak and a gently sloping counting-characteristic plateau. The tests performed show that selected samples of the FEU-111 photomultipliers are suitable for use in photon counters. The modulator photocurrent-blocking efficiency is higher in the one-electron counting mode of the output signal than in the measurment of the mean anode current.
