Northwest Alaskan Pipeline Co. and Northwest Pipeline Corp. filed applications in Nov. 1978 with the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to build major sections of the project to bring Canadian natural gas to southern California by 1980. FERC approval of those sections of the 4800 mi Alaskan system, which total 161 mi in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, would allow early construction. Northwest Alaskan also asked for a permit to sell 240 million cu ft/day of surplus Alberta gas to Pacific Interstate Transmission Co., a subsidiary of Pacific Lighting Corp. Northwest Alaskan had previously received approval to sell 800 million cu ft/day of gas to Northern Natural Gas Co., Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co., and United Gas Pipe Line Co. A court challenge to the 1.04 billion cu ft/day import authorization granted Northwest Alaskan by FERC, was dismissed in Nov. 1978 by the District of Columbia U.S. Court of Appeals. The Canadian Government still has not approved the export of its gas to the U.S.
