A comparative analysis is made of the momentum and angular characteristics of ..pi../sup -/ mesons produced in interactions of neutrons with protons and with carbon and tantalum nuclei at momentum 4.2 GeV/c. It is shown that in production of ..pi../sup -/ mesons an important role is played by channels with neutron charge exchange and also by secondary rescatterings in the nucleus. The experimental results are compared with the Dubna version of the intranuclear cascade model (DCM).
