We investigate the momentum and angular characteristics (average momentum, emission angle, transverse momentum, and rapidity) of negative pions produced in interactions of deuterium, helium, and carbon nuclei with tantalum nuclei (A = 181) at a primary projectile-nucleus momentum p/sub 0/ = 4.2 GeV/c per nucleon, as functions of the variable that characterized the cumulative number. The results are compared with nucleon-nucleon data at the corresponding primary energy and with the predictions of the cascade model. We investigate also the behavior of the invariant differential cross section for ..pi../sup -/ meson production as functions of the cumulative number.
