Florida Gas Co.'s proposed 1500 mi coal slurry line to move eastern Kentucky coal to Georgia and Florida utilities is being considered by nine other major electric utilities, which Florida Gas has asked to join in the funding of a 4-6 mo feasibility study of the line to be carried out by Bechtel Corp. Florida Gas has already done preliminary work on two slurry line proposals: an $864 million, 28 in., 15 million ton/yr line and a $1.6 billion, 48 in., 45 million ton/yr line, both terminating at Fort Pierce, Fla. Florida Gas has estimated that it and the nine other utilities could save $5 billion to $10 billion in transportation costs over the next 20 years by using a slurry line, which could deliver all future fuel supplies required by the participants and which is a workable alternative to other forms of fuel transport. Florida Gas has applied to the U.S Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for permission to convert a substantial part of its dual natural gas lines into carriers for petroleum products, including gasoline, fuel oil, and kerosene.
