Coal slurry line planners reconsider central collection site

A collection site at Huntington, W. Va., for Transgulf Pipeline Co.'s $2 billion, 1500 mi coal slurry pipeline to supply six Florida and Georgia utilities with eastern coal, was recommended in a Bechtel Corp., feasibility study, which estimated that the pipeline could provide 40 million of the 55 million tons/yr of coal needed by 1985 by the utilities. The advantages of the site include low-sulfur coal nearby, proximity to a transportation center along a river, and less distance from the utilities than other sites. An Illinois site is also under consideration, according to G.L. Maciula, president of Transgulf, because of vast reserves which can be mined more easily and cheaply than those in West Virginia and eastern Kentucky and less stringent mining regulations. The Illinois site, however, could cost more than the West Virginia site due to the greater pipeline length needed and the cost of land. Transgulf is a subsidiary of Florida Gas Co., which will share the pipeline with Florida Power and Light Co., Florida Power Corp., the Southern Co., Tampa Electric Co., Orlando Power Co., Seminole Electric Co-op, and the City of Gainesville.
