A group of Southeast electric utility operators and a gas transmission company, Florida Gas Co., have awarded Bechtel Inc. a $200,000 contract for a coal slurry line feasibility study. The group wants to move Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois coals through a 1500 mi line to Florida and Georgia powerplants. Bechtel is studying a variety of line diameters and systems to deliver approx.35-40 million tons/yr of coal to the region. The study should be complete by early Oct. 1978. Partners in the feasibility study include Florida Power Corp., Florida Power and Light Co., the City of Gainsville, Seminole Electric Cooperative Inc., Southern Company Services Inc. (representing Georgia Power Co. and Gulf Power Co.), and Tampa Electric Co.
