Two coal slurry line proposals show promise for quicker construction than other current proposals Energy Transportation Systems Inc. (ETSI) has proposed to move 25 million tons/yr coal from near Gillette, Wyo., to terminals at Pryor, Okla., and Newport and Redfield, Ark., with a spur to barge-loading facilities on the Mississippi River at Penton, Miss. ETSI has estimated that the 1355 mi, 38 in. system would cost $1.3 billion 1979 dollars and up to $1.7 billion by 1984. A group, led by Nevada Power Co., has proposed a 12 in., 70 mi line to link South Central Utah coal reserves with a powerplant near St. George, Utah; and a 22 in., 183 mi, 9.1 million ton/yr line to serve a generating station near Las Vegas, Nev. Four other coal slurry line proposals stalled due to right-of-way and water supply problems; feasibility studies by Boeing Co. on a 650 mi., 26 in. line from Utah to an export terminal at Oxnard, Calif.; and current congressional legislation providing power of eminent domain to slurry lines legislation are discussed.
