The energy dependence of the production cross sections in long-lived ({ital l}) and short-lived ({ital s}) isomeric states in {sup 236}Np together with the isomeric ratio of the reaction {sup 238}U({ital p},3{ital n}){sup 236}Np near the reaction threshold was measured. The yield of {sup 236}Np{sup {ital s}} was determined from the alpha activity of {sup 236}Pu and the yield of {sup 236}Np{sup {ital l}} from analysis by thermal neutron fission. From the energy dependence of the isomeric ratio it follows that the long-lived state is the ground state in {sup 236}Np. Theoretical calculations of the yields support these results.
