EXCITATION FUNCTIONS OF U$sup 235$ AND U$sup 238$ BOMBARDED WITH HELIUM AND DEUTERIUM IONS

Cross sections were determined for the reactions U/sup 238/(He/sup 4/ ,)Pu/sup 241/STAincluding U/sup 238/(He/sup 4,p)Np/sup 241/ B/sup -/ yields Pu/sup 241/!, U/sup 238/(He/sup 4/,2n)Pu/sup 240/, U/sup 238/(He/ sup 4/, 3n)Pu/sup 239/, U/sup 238/(He/sup 4, 4n)Pu/sup 238/, U/sup 238/(He/sup 4/ ,fission), U/sup 235/(He/sup 4/,n)Pu/sup 238/, and U/sup 235 /(He/sup 4/,3n)Pus/ up 236/ induced by helium ions of energies from 18.0 to 43.O Mev. The yields of Pu/sup 239/, Pu/sup 240/, and Pu/sup 241/ were determined by a mass spectrometric technique. Cross sections were measured for the reactions U/sup 238/(d,p)U/sup 239/, U/sup 238/(d,2n)Np/sup 238/, U/sup 238/(d,4n)Np/sup 236/(ss hr), U/sup 238/ (d,t; d,p2n) U/sup 237/,U/sup 235/(d,n)Np/sup 236/(22 hr), U/sup 235/(d,2nNp/sup 235, and U/s up 235/(d,3n) Np/sup 235/ induced by deuteuons of energes from 5.8 to 21.5 Mev. The above excitation functions are compared with Similar excitation functions of nonfissile nuclei to show the effect of fissionability on spallation cross sections. Mean values of GAMMA /sub n// GAMMA /sub f/ are derived for several heavy nuclides by fitting the experimental excitation functions with theoretical cross sections calculated from the Jackson model modifiod for fission. In addition to the discussion on thc compound-nucleus formation machanism, some discussion of the experimental evidence for direct interactions is given. (auth)
