SEVERAL SPALLATION REACTIONS OF URANIUM-238 PLUS HELIUM-4 (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4348881
A radiochemical study is presented of the reactions of helium ions of energies less than 48 Mev with U/sup 238/ to produce the spallation products U/ sup 237/, U/sup 239, Np/sup 238/, and Pu/sup 238/. A search for the product of an ( alpha 2p) reaction, U/sup 240/, was unsuccessful. The ( alpha , alpha n), ( alpha ,2pn), and ( alpha ,p3n) reactions are discussed in terms of direct- interaction mechanisms, while the ( alpha ,4n) reaction appears to be typical of the well-known compound-nucleus process. Calculated values of GAMMA /sub n// GAMMA /sub t/ for the plutonium isotopes 239 through 242 based on the experimental cross sections of the ( alpha ,4n) reactioa are given. On the basis of these values, theoretical excitation functions are constructed for the ( alpha ,n; 2n; 3n) reactions of U/sup 238/. (auth)
