Some criteria are given for the safe disposal of radioactive wastes in the ocean. The most important goal of radioactive waste management is to protect man from the damaging effects of ionizing radiation. Long-term solutions to the problem of radioactive waste disposal and the role of the oceans toward the solutions need to be determined. The problem of waste disposal must be dealt with now rather than continuing to rely on interim storage procedures.
