Radioactive mixed waste disposal
- Westinghouse Hanford Co., Richland, WA (United States)
This paper describes a system for the treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) of solid radioactive waste. Waste disposal criteria, known as the ``Land Disposal Restrictions`` (40 CFR 268), must be met before disposing solid waste in a landfill. These restrictions (40 CFR 268) can be concentration-based or a specified technology. In Washington State, the disposal criteria for radioactive mixed waste (RMW) are very strict. Currently, few RMWs meet the disposal criteria; therefore, these waste must be stored until treatment (i.e., specified technology) is available to condition the waste for disposal. At the Hanford Site, the Central Waste Complex (CWC) is designed to provide interim and long-term storage of RMW. When completed, the CWC will have the capacity to store more than seventy-five thousand 208-L (55-gal) drums of waste.
