According to the latest government data, US primary conventional-energy consumption fell in 1981 to 73.90 quadrillion Btu from 1980's level of 75.91 quads. Per-capita consumption decreased sharply, from 333.4 to 321.6 million Btu, mainly because of price-induced conservation and the US economic slowdown. Marketed natural gas production remained stable at 20.2 trillion CF (wet basis), down only slightly from 20.4 TCF in 1980. On a dry basis, gas production was 19.4 TCF in 1981, while consumption was 19.3 TCF, down 3% from the 19.9 TCF used the previous year. Crude oil production dipped slightly; coal production fell substantially due to a 2-month labor strike.
