US primary conventional energy consumption in 1981 has been assessed by the Department of Energy (DOE) in its August 1982 Monthly Energy Review at 73.90 quadrillion Btu (1 quad = 10/sup 15/ Btu), down from 75.91 quads in 1980. Percapita energy consumption decreased sharply from 333.4 million Btu in 1980 to 321.6 million Btu in 1981. (The previous high value of 352.1 million Btu occurred in 1973.) Price-induced conservation and the economic slow-down are responsible for the decrease. Marketed natural-gas production held up well in 1981 at 20.2 trillion CF (TCF) on a wet basis, down slightly from 20.4 TCF in 1980. On a dry basis, production was 19.4 TCF in 1981. Consumption in 1981 was 19.3 TCF (dry basis), down 3% from the 1980 level of 19.9 TCF and nearly 13% from the 1972 peak of 22.1 TCF. A loss was experienced in all sectors, according to DOE data. Domestic crude petroleum production averaged 8.57 million bbl/day in 1981 - a slight decrease from 1980 and an 11% drop from the 9.64 million bbl daily peak reached in 1970. Petroleum liquids consumption, including natural gas plant liquids, totaled 32.11 quads (16.06 x 10/sup 6/ bbl/day of petroleum products) in 1981, down from 34.20 quads in 1980 and 27.97 quads in 1978 (peak year), and accounted for 43% of total energy demand. Crude oil imports fell from an average 5.26 million bbl/day in 1980 to 4.40 million bbl/day in 1981; products imports declined from 1.65 million bbl/day to 1.60 million bbl/day. These figures include additions to the strategic petroleum reserve (SPR)). SPR stocks rose from 108 million bbl at year-end 1980 to 230 million bbl at the end of 1981. Coal production (including anthracite) dropped from 829.7 million tons in 1980 (peak year) to 820.1 million tons in 1981. The drop was due to the April-May strike.
