The US Department of Energy estimates that US primary energy consumption in 1979 reached 78.10 quadrillion Btu, some 0.05 quads below 1978 consumption levels, reports IGT. Per-capita energy consumption decreased from 357.3 million Btu in 1978 to 354.1 million in 1979. Marketed natural-gas production in 1979 was 19.72 trillion CF on a wet basis, down 1.5% from 1978; on a dry basis, production was 18.83 TCF. Consumption was 19.54 TCF (dry basis), down 0.7% from the 1978 level of 19.63 TCF and a considerable drop from the 1972 peak of 22.10 TCF. The average wellhead price of natural gas was $1.14/1000 CF in 1979, compared with 90.5 cents in 1978 and only 18.6 cents in 1972. As calculated by IGT, the ratio of energy consumption to the gross national product in 1972 dollars was 54,556 Btu/$ in 1979, down from 55,856 Btu/$ in 1978 and from the high values of 62,224 Btu/$ in 1970 and 62,350 Btu/$ in 1956.
