The combined effects of hyperthermia and 5-thio-D-glucose on cell survival was studied in vitro. 5-thio-D-glucose was selectively cytotoxic to hypoxic mastocytoma P815-X2 cells of DBA/2J mice and Chinese hamster V79-171b cells and the selective cytotoxicity was potentiated by mild hyperthermia at 40 to 42/sup 0/C. We conclude therefore that it may be possible to eliminate the radioresistant hypoxic cells in tumors by proper combination of 5-thio-D-glucose and hyperthermia with minimal damage to oxic normal tissues.
