The use of a C/sub 4/ alcohol allows cheap methanol to be blended economically into leaded gasoline today. This paper discusses blends made with a mixture of a gasoline-grade tertiary butyl alcohol (GTBA) and methanol. The GTBA minimizes or eliminates many of the undesirable physical characteristics often associated with methanol/gasoline blends. A review is given of the developments of the GTBA/methanol mixtures called Oxinol blending component, a trademark of the Atlantic Richfield Co. These developments include: a successful EPA waiver application to increase the allowable limit on Oxinol's use in unleaded gasoline, an extensive research and development program to expand this technology and a comprehensive test market program to confirm the compatibility of gasoline containing Oxinol with existing gasoline distribution systems and the current automobile population. Economic considerations are included. It is concluded that the economic value of Oxinol at the 3.5 wt% oxygen maximum, or about 9.5 vol%, is attractive to refiners and justifies its purchase even of the refiner is ''long'' on octane. Oxinol has been extensively tested and has been found to be equivalent to gasohol, a commercially proven fuel. Oxinol has been used commercially with very few problems.
