Performance testing of gasolines blended with methanol and gasoline grade tertiary-butyl alcohol

Conference · · Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Pet. Chem., Prepr.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6507705
As the result of an evaluation program, an EPA waiver was granted to Atlantic Richfield for use of methanol at concentrations of up to 4.5 vol % in combination with at least an equal volume of gasoline grade tertiary-butyl alcohol (GTBA) so that the total oxygen content of a finished gasoline will not exceed 3.5 wt %. The in-vehicle performance testing of the methanol/GTBA gasolines is emphasized. Results of four major performance areas are presented: exhaust emissions, evaporative emissions, automotive material compatibility, and driveability. The results of these evaluations led to the commercial use and test marketing of Oxinol gasoline blends by a number of US gasoline refiners. 7 figures, 6 tables.
