Methanol has become one of the most viable alternative energy sources to emerge from the oil crisis of the 1970s. ARCO Chemical Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company, has been researching and developing the uses of methanol and gasoline grade tertiary-butyl alcohol (GTBA) blends since 1978 and received an Environmental Protection Agency waiver for this blend in 1981. Since that time ARCO has been involved in several markets and has gained considerable experience with the use of methanol/GTBA as their commercial use has grown. This paper discusses the economics of methanol/GTBA blends, summarizes the extensive testing conducted with automotive fuel systems and gasoline distribution system components, and discusses the future growth of methanol use as an automotive fuel blending component.
