Study of correlations between multiplicities of low-energy pions and backward protons in. pi. /sup -/ C interactions

Correlations between the multiplicities of low-energy ..pi../sup + -/ mesons and protons emitted into the backward hemisphere in the lab in ..pi../sup -/C interactions have been investigated experimentally at a primary momentum 5 GeV/c. The data obtained indicate that the absorption of secondary low-energy ..pi../sup +/ mesons by a correlated pair of nucleons in the nucleus plays an appreciable role in the production of backward protons.
