Charged-particle correlations in 5-GeV/c. pi. /sup -/C interactions with a backward-emitted proton

A study has been made of the distributions in the angle between the emission directions of the protons emitted into the rear hemisphere (parrow-down) and the emission directions of other protons in various momentum intervals. The dependence of the associative multiplicities of ..pi.. mesons and of protons emitted into the forward hemisphere on the number parrow-down is analyzed. The correlations in the emission angles of the two protons can be explained, for the most part, by two mechanisms: rescattering by nucleons in the nucleus and the absorption of a ..pi.. meson by a pair of nucleons of the nucleus.
